Question:

Question:

What is SPAM and what can I do about it?

Response:

Spam is any email message, regardless of its content, that is sent to multiple recipients who have not specifically requested the mail. Spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasilegal services. Mail is not considered spam if the recipient has "opted in" to receive the information or agreed to be placed on the distribution list. Items such as subscribed newsletters or emails sent from sites where the user has previously registered to receive product update information, is not spam.

Tips to avoid and reduce SPAM:

    NEW!!!
  • Turn on your FREE MHO Networks Email filter using our advanced webmail software! To access and activate the SPAM filter, click here: webmail.mho.net

After logging into webmail, you will find the SPAM Email filter in the "options" section. Please read the instructions on how to use it correctly before enabling. Enjoy!

  • Avoid posting your email address online. This is especially true when posting to chat rooms or newsgroups, displaying your email on auction and sales sites. Spammers often send scavenger bots (programs that spammers run to “harvest” email addresses) to these sites to find email addresses to add to their lists.

  • Don’t list your email address directly on a web page, even your own – as a “contact us” or “click to email” name. Instead use an alias or secondary account that you can delete later if necessary.

  • Don’t use email addresses that are easy to guess - like john This can also increase your chances of receiving unwanted spam.

  • Never respond to spam – even if you are asking to be deleted. Responding will most likely increase the quantity of unwanted mail you receive simply because the spammer knows your address is active.

  • Block unwanted emails from a specific spammer using filters inside your email program. This feature is available in most standard email programs, simply type “filters” into the help section for instructions for your program.

  • Read fine print when filling out online forms. E-tailers often add small print carefully when you fill out an online form - they often place check boxes when signing up online for something they ask you if you want to receive information from them online? Typically the box is checked automatically.

  • You can create "filters" or "message rules" in your email software (Outlook Express, Eudora, Etc...). You can either delete the SPAM before it reaches your inbox or immediately transfer it to a another folder (maybe labeled "SPAM"). Check your email program and it's "help" menu for more info.
